Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #31: Beyond The Grid Review

From the events of The Shattered Grid, Beyond The Grid tells the tale of those who survived Drakkon’s wrath by the skin of their teeth. (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #31 takes place between the events of issue 30 and the Shattered Grid Finale)

The remaining Rangers that were apart of the rescue mission that saved Lord Drakkon’s prisoners have now reached a void of unknown space and beyond the reaches of the morphing grid. Without long lasting supplies, resources, and energy to sustain a proper morph, Grace leads her team in The Promethea blind to what the next step may be. Months pass with no signs of life, until a distress signal shows up. Desperate to reconnect with any civilization and resupply the Rangers set out to help those in need. They are met with a very unfortunate surprise.

It’s been a few weeks since the release of the Shattered Grid Finale by the old creative team, and with the absence of them, as well as our usual main characters, this issue had me questioning how much I would truly enjoy it. As a Power Ranger fan, I may be slightly bias, but as a reader, there was no proper introduction to our new heroes. Only three of the nine main characters in this issue have been introduced in prior issues. Although Marguerite Bennett did an excellent job setting up the idea of the Beyond the Grid story line, she did fail to get me connected to the individuals we will be following for the foreseeable future.

With the introduction of (Spoiler) Bennett grabbed my attention enough to leave me wanting more, but without any answers of what happened in the Shattered Grid Finale I fear most may lose interest not having “their” team back. The connection to this new team will be vital to the positive feedback towards Marguerite and Boom! Studios in their decision to go in this direction for their story.
