Sonic The Hedgehog #9 Review

With the Master Emerald hostage, Sonic and friends are taking the fight to Neo Sonic. Knuckles in particular is very eager to get his hands dirty. Ian Flynn has given us a massive team up with just nine issues and just one story arc. A team up this big usually only happens in the “big two” (DC & Marvel) every once in a while. To see Ian having so much fun with these characters so soon in the series leaves me in high hopes for the rest of the series going forward. Each one of these characters has been given a voice to call their own in just this short issue, Knuckles still being the brooding one of the group, Shadow being a close second with his quiet tendencies. Even having new characters like Tangle and Whisper having bigger roles to play in the massive team-up. With her always being to herself and quiet, just like her name, Whisper seems to be the one that is in question with Blaze. Whether Ian makes something more of that later, only time will tell. Whisper for now just seems to be a shy person with a loner type attitude.

The title of the series is Sonic the Hedgehog, but seeing so many of the supporting cast is what really makes this book great. There are plenty of stories I’m sure Ian wants to tell with a solo Sonic, maybe a small three issue arc or so, but with world building like this, who would want that first hand? Ian has made this world so big so quickly, I wouldn’t be surprised if spin-offs or maxi series tie-ins start to be announced in the coming months. Knuckles and Shadow are big names in themselves for the series, but having lovable and highly energetic characters like Tangle and Amy help create stories not otherwise told with just Sonic.

With Neo Sonic’s plan seemingly playing out just like he wanted to, Sonic and Knuckles look to have bitten more than they can chew at the moment, almost makes you wonder if they should have taken Blaze up on her offer (Go pick up the issue to find out what I’m talking about). Shadow is MIA for the time being and the reason is still unknown. Amy seems to be taking charge pretty well and the gang is ready for anything Neo Sonic throws at them.
