Wonder Woman #43 Review

Written by James Robinson
Art by Marco Santucci
Colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr.

If you like action in your comic book storytelling, then you’ve come to the right place as this issue is jam packed with it. From Steve Trevor setting up a simulation for Jason to train in, to Wonder Woman battling the Furies after getting bored with interrogation, and then to a goddamn Apokolyptian Stargate being turned on for the 1st time, there is some serious octane being burned to crank out issue #43. It had me wondering if Robinson tuned in recently to watch the recently released Stargate Origins webisodes and had it on the brain when writing this. I’m not throwing shade, I’m a big SG-1 fan so it actually made me smile like the big goofball I am.

I don’t know if James Robinson heard the death knell coming a couple of issues ago when he wrote that clip show issue, or if someone had a gentle word to him to snap out of the funk he was in – I don’t really care, I’m just glad things are finally moving at a real pace.

The story this issue focuses on is Darkseid cooking up a scheme to obtain the remaining artifacts out of the clutches of ARGUS. What I love about his scheme, without blatantly spoiling it for you, is that he takes the mountain to Mohammed approach to get what he wants, and I love the results.

As you can tell, I found Robinson’s storytelling to be considerably better this issue than it has been for a while. I was invested in each panel and there were no exchanges that I skimmed over.

The art is absolutely stunning this issue. Santucci’s pencils and Fajardo’s colors are a joy to behold. I’m so glad that Wonder Woman’s art is always on point because I feel that this is what keeps a loyal readership through the lean story arcs. I’m not a drooler, but if I was, my saliva would be all over these pages. Well done to the art team.

The issue ends with the promise of another showdown, so do yourself a favour, and pick up this issue so that you are not lost when issue #44 hits the stands. Robinson has an opportunity to stay in the high rev range all the way to #50 and silence those who are still pining for a Rucka return. Godspeed Jimmy.
