Nightwing #41 Review

Written by Sam Humphries
Art by Bernard Chang and Jamal Campbell
Colors by Marcelo Maiolo and Jamal Campbell

The finale to the 7 part Untouchable story finally comes to a conclusion, and I would be lying if I didn’t say that this issue left me a little disappointed.

This issue has a lot of action sequences, some laughs, and a few thrills, but the actual way the story ends is the biggest problem for me. Without spoiling what actually occurs at the end what I can say is that you may find yourself proclaiming out loud “Is that it? That’s how it ends?” after reading the issue. Hopefully you aren’t in a public place when you utter these words so as not to draw too much attention to yourself.

On top of this if you were hoping for a more in-depth explanation of the Judge’s abilities and how exactly he does what he does, then don’t get your hopes up because it ain’t happening. Sam Humphries even toys with the reader and this mystery through Guppy, as he makes a return to the arc in a prison scene with Nightwing as they discuss the Judge and all that he has done and caused others to do. To me, it is obvious that Humphries is happy to tease the reader about how the Judge does what he does but is unwilling to follow through. With Humphries’ run ending on Nightwing, it also means that we may not get an answer for a while, if ever.

One great thing about this issue is that Jamal Campbell returns to share the art duties with Bernard Chang. I have made no secret of my love for his style and when he did not feature in the last issue I was quite disappointed, so it was nice to see his return for the final chapter. No matter what, the art in Nightwing always seems to deliver. It has been the clear strength of this series for a long time now and has sustained me for about 6 months  while I have pined for more from the writing on this series.

It’s not a great finish to the Judge arc but it’s not terrible either. The art is fantastic and is enough in my opinion to justify the $2.99 spend. Two more issues, then we get to see what Benjamin Percy has in store for Dick Grayson.
