Batgirl #19 Review

Batgirl #19

Writer: Hope Larson
Pencils: Chris Wildgoose
Inks: Jose Marzan Jr.

A blizzard hits Burnside in the newest Batgirl issue. Everyone in the city is caught off-guard when there is absolutely no warning a massive snow storm is about to hit town. Batgirl investigates the Burnside location of the American Weather Association, which had its budget cut massively ever since a climate change denier was appointed into office by the president. Can you imagine if such a dumb, counterintuitive thing happened in real life? Hahaha… ha.

Apparently, the AWA office was hacked. Batgirl suspects it was a group of anti-science terrorists she tangled with a year previously. Turns out these days the group is just a bunch of nerds that play board games about gerrymandering districts.

Batgirl gets a message that her friend Qadir’s office at a secret government location is being robbed as we speak. Batgirl rushes over, hoping to catch the baddies before more harm is done.

The issue does a great job of setting up the conflict and leaving the reader guessing as to what is going on. In terms of who could be the culprit, the easiest selection seems to be Penguin (based solely on the fact he’s the only real villain who shows up in the issue). However, that seems like too much of a red herring. There’s also the question of who Qadir works for and what exactly the crooks are stealing.

This is a great issue that excellently showcases Batgirl’s brute strength as well as her detective skills. I can’t wait to see how the story progresses in the next issue.
