Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles #1

Writer: Mark Russell
Penciler: Mike Feehan
Inker: Mark Morales
Colorist: Paul Mounts

Mark Russell continues to be a master at his craft. He took The Flintstones and made it something amazing, and now he is about to the same with Snagglepuss. This may only be the first issue, but it already has elements of greatness. Snagglepuss is an interesting character with an interesting life. He is a famous playwright from Mississippi, has a great play ending of a high note, is well respected among his peers, and has everything going his way. All is not as it seems though with Snagglepuss because he does have some secrets, but these secrets may come back to haunt him.

Another element that makes this issue so incredible is the time frame Mark Russell decided to set the series in. The series is taking place during the Cold War especially when America was investigating citizens for having communist connections. Writers such as James Baldwin and Langston Hughes were investigated for having communist connections. The same is happening to Snagglepuss and some of his friends as well. The government seems determined to find out all they can and will use whatever methods they have at the disposal to acquire that information. It’s once Snagglepuss is pulled into the crosshairs is when it all becomes fascinating.

The art and colors for this book are perfect for this story. Characters like Snagglepuss and Huckleberry are drawn cartoon like, but still maintain a sense of humanity. These characters all interact with humans and it all seems to be the norm. Mike Feehan, Mark Morales, and Paul Mounts excel in this issue and can’t wait to see what the future issues will look like.

If you want something different from DC, this is the book for you. I love a lot of the superhero comics DC is publishing right now, but I also enjoy books like this one. There are interesting characters, unique art, and a story with an intriguing premise. This creative team has something exceptional on their hands, so don’t miss it.
