The Bat Family has been reunited and now they are all ready to face off against Shiva and The League of Shadows! But what about The Colony and Ra’s himself, what plans lurk in the shadows beside the one we already know?
In the last issue, we saw Cassandra Cains rise back to glory. Bringing the entire team back from the brink and now putting them face to face with Shiva. While we do see the scuffle between the team and Shiva here, ultimately it is again about Cassandra. Finally showing her mother that see can see death but she chooses life. Meanwhile, Colonel Kane and Ulysses are unleashing the swarm upon the sewers to make Shiva pay for the “death” of Kate. With somewhat of an anti-climatic ending to the story, I will leave that for you to discover and make your own decisions.
There is a theme I have seen in a lot of DC Rebirth titles and it is here as well. It seems like all of these events are small pieces that are heading to a much bigger war. That everything that has happened up until now has just been the beginning, a precursor for what is to come. The final pages here hint at what is to come in the next arc for Detective Comics involving none other than Ra’s himself.
The art has been somewhat shaky on this title for the last arc. While I do enjoy Takara’s work, there is a rushed feel to the art here yet again. With some panels really coming across as stunning and others looking half done and simplistic. Some panels have detailed and well thought out backgrounds. While other are simply splashes of color or gradients, particularly in the fight scenes. All around the art here is good but it is yet again a mixed bag.
This story has been building since the beginning of Tynion’s run on Detective Comics, with small hints left here and there until this last arc. Here we are at the end of that and it feels like the story went out with a fizzle instead of a bang. However, it does look like this was a stepping stone on the way to something much bigger. As the final pages do build towards the next story arc and the war seems to be just beginning. I have high hopes that we get a bigger payoff sometime soon, as I truly love this series and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
