God Country #4 Review

In God Country #4 we take a trip to Hell, with Balegrim taking Dee in order to get Valofax back for his father, he might soon regret this decision.
While Emmet is on a trip to Hell to get back Dee, both Roy and Jane are left back at home with the army of Balegrim surrounding the house. Left to fend for themselves and Emmet’s actions in Hell isn’t making the situation any better. When Emmet and Balegrim go toe to toe, loved ones tilt the battlefield for an unfair advantage. What started out as a bang ends with a whimper where Valofax reveals how much power he truly has.

Dialogue is on point here, as it always has been. In a story where Gods and epic warfare take a backseat to characterization, we all win. On one side we have Roy and Jane having the discussion of what all of this means for their beliefs. With Roy praying and Jane questioning how he can believe anything after what they have seen in the past day. On the other, we have Balegrim explaining to Emmet mortality and asking him if this is how he wants to be remembered. All the while Emmet just wants his family and memory to stay together and will fight to the death to defend both.

With this issue starting out particularly grim, a trip to hell can do that, then end on a high note the art team really brought it all together. Shaw’s ability to depict emotions really bring these characters to life. Paired with the color work from Wordie, shifting your emotions on a dime. Wordie is quickly becoming my favorite colorist in comics currently, he is killing on this title along with Shaw.

God Country is one of the best comic book titles out right now, there is no question about it. With an amazing creative team telling a truly great story there is no reason for you not to go pick this title up.
