Suicide Squad / The Banana Splits Special #1 Review

The Suicide Squad and The Banana Splits?! Did I just read that? Yep. It happened. Suicide Squad Banana Splits Annual #1Hanna-Barbera and DC Comics create a mash-up that was not only a good read but was pretty funny to boot. Including the story name of Suicide Splits (Hey, it beats “Banana Squad”), that gave me a good laugh.
We start out seeing the group The Banana Splits having issues with the law. Being mistaken for Metahumans or maybe some mutant lab animals. While going for his “Licenth and Regithration” makes the police think he was going for a weapon causes a hilarious one-sided shootout.

All of this leads to the Banana Splits being taken into Belle Rev. When the Banana Splits describe themselves as a “bubble gum pop music group” in the mess hall of prison for Metahumans and really bad people. You instantly find yourself saying “uh-oh”.

Amanda Waller sent the Suicide squad on a mission that was more than they could handle. In search of backup to get the team out of this jam, she looks for someone even Suicide Squad Banana Splits Annual #1more expandable than the Suicide Squad. Just as this goes down we see the Banana Splits can handle themselves as hell breaks loose in the prison. A team of a Blood Hound, Elephant, Gorilla, and a Lion. Sounds like the perfect group for a fight.

I don’t want to give away much more here, but this comic continues on in the same ridiculous manner it starts in. I found myself laughing out loud throughout this entire read, it was just a lot of fun. Somehow Bedard made the Banana Splits fit into Suicide Squad’s world just enough to do a parody of itself and had a lot of fun along the way.

I enjoyed this comic. It was funny and entertaining to read. The art was basic but worked for what they were going for. Well done.
