X-O Manowar #1 Review

Before we really get into this, I have a confession to make. I have never read any X-O Manowar before this, so yes this is my fist foray into this world. As such this review will be from someone that knows nothing about the world or anything previous. Fresh eyes here.
Right away the art here is breathtaking, the pencils of Giorello are so detailed here. I find myself going back through this book just to admire the artwork. The very first page is a two-page spread and man is it something. Add in the color work from Rodriguez, with soft, almost like watercolor tones. This book is a thing to revere, they have set a very high bar for art in this first issue.

Story wise, I must admit I was a bit lost here, but never in a bad way. Kindt made it so you got what was needed to understand the story. I could tell that if I had read this title before I would get a lot more from it. Yet this is a new reader friendly book, encouraging you to go find out more.

Kindt did a marvelous job of setting up this story. Most of it is running and gunning as we go, but it never feels rushed or ill-paced. A lot gets accomplished in this first issue, getting right to the meat of the story. While some of this is at the cost of characterization, Schon being a good example of that. Not knowing the history of this comic, Schon’s and Aric’s relationship came off a bit flat.

In all this is a great start to the series for me, while there are some nitpicks here and there, nothing big enough to matter. If you haven’t picked this up yet, I suggest doing so, even if it is just for the art.
