Batman #18 Review

Batman #18 is the continuation of the I am Bane arc, this being part 3. Bane and Batman, are they really so different from one another? Tom King spends a good amount of this issue showing us that they are different men derived from the same tragedy. While there are similarities between Batman and Bane if anything you see how their environments made them who they are.
Riding alongside that narrative is the beginnings of a fight between Batman and Bane, which is very one-sided. As we move along it becomes more apparent that Bane is clearly beating Batman, however, Batman isn’t really fighting back. With Batman playing coy to trick Bane and lure Bane into Arkham Asylum, for what should be an action-packed adventure.

Moving further into this arc we see Tom King setting up the narrative. Showing us why Bane and Batman are such great foes. Bane refers to other villains throughout this issue in Batman’s Rogue Gallery in a rather condescending way. Making a play that Bane is not your normal Batman foe, he isn’t in it for the game of it, he truly feels that he is better than Batman. Showing yet again that Bane is not someone to be taken lightly, a trend that began a few issues back.

Matching King’s story Finch, Miki, and Bellaire brings great visuals to drive all of this home. In the sections where we see Bane and Batman’s story compared the use of color and tone help convey each character. As a fan of Bane, it is always nice seeing him back in his venom suit and mask, Finch’s pencils do it justice here. With Finch’s return to this title, it is my favorite arc art wise so far.

Looking back on this run of Batman so far King has been piecing together a cohesive story throughout, with threads from the first arc still playing out now. While this is rather impressive at times the story has had its lulls. Batman #18 falls into that category. A great storytelling piece yet being 3 issues into this arc we are just now getting to the action. If anything this run on Batman will be excellent trade reads, where we don’t have to wait 2 weeks for the next issue.
