The Advantage of a Green Lantern Appearance in ‘Justice League’

Yesterday, a huge development on Zack Snyder’s Justice League film was hinted at by The Wrap. In an article summarizing all of the known facts about the film, they included this detail: “A member of the Green Lantern Corps. will be seen in a key sequence.”

ow, while that is somewhat vague, it’s also incredibly exciting! Green Lantern was one of the founding members of the Justice League, so it has felt a bit odd not seeing him as a part of the lineup yet for 2017’s film. If this report proves to be true, then even this “sequence” is relatively short, it could have a major role in convincing audiences to stick around for the future of the DCEU.

It’s important to note that we don’t know which Green Lantern will make an appearance, as the report simply mentions “a member of the Green Lantern Corps.” There are literally thousands of members of the Green Lantern Corps, but it’s probably safe to assume that the one we’ll see in Justice League will be one of Earth’s Lanterns: Hal Jordan, Jon Stewart, Guy Gardner, or Kyle Rayner (New Lanterns Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz are unlikely to be used since they’re still relatively unknown). Hal Jordan would be the most likely Lantern to make an appearance, since he is the one audiences are most familiar with; especially due to his appearance in the 2011 Green Lantern film with Ryan Reynolds.

No matter who they go with, incorporating the Green Lantern mythos into such a key DCEU movie will be a major advantage. Here’s why:

1) Green Lantern is a beloved character.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Greg Silverman (president of creative development at Warner Bros) had this to say about Green Lantern: “[Green Lantern] is an incredible character. He’s actually multiple incredible characters … There’s real opportunity there. We didn’t do a great job on that first Green Lantern movie. This is a character who deserves to be treated in the same way that Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman are being treated now, which is with great reverence. I guess I can say to the Green Lantern fans: if they can be patient with us, I think they’ll be really happy.”

That statement is comforting to any Green Lantern fan, because it shows that the studio at the very least acknowledges how important this character is to countless fans all over the world.

2) The DCEU needs all the hype it can muster.
Whether or not you’ve loved the first 3 DCEU movies (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Suicide Squad), you can’t deny that these movies have been met with mixed review at best. There’s a lot riding on Wonder Woman and Justice League to win audiences back over to believe in the future of the DCEU. And if this Green Lantern appearance can show that the studio is on a path to creating a story that will do justice to this character, then they’ll have hype from old fans and new fans alike.

3) Audiences need to move on from 2011’s Green Lantern.
While the first 3 movies in the DCEU have divided fans, most fans (and even the president of creative development at Warner Bros) agree that 2011’s Green Lantern just didn’t give Green Lantern the movie he deserved. For comic book fans, we don’t necessarily need a good movie to be convinced of how awesome Green Lantern is. We have over 75 years of comics to do that! But for the casual movie goer, there’s a good chance their first impression of Green Lantern wasn’t so stellar. The sooner Warner Bros and DC Comics can replace that image of the Green Lantern to audiences, the better.

All in all, we couldn’t be more excited to see some Green on the screen in next year’s Justice League. How about you? Are you excited to see Green Lantern, or would you rather wait to see him in future DCEU movies?
