Rat Queens Volume 1: Sass and Sorcery Review

Rat Queens is a comic written by Kurtis J. Weibe with art by Roc Upchurchand and published by Image Comics since September 2013. This is a fun and crazy series based on 4 girl that are a mercenary group. The group is made of Hannah the Elven Mage, Violet a Dwarven Warrior, a human cleric names Dee and a Halfling named Betty. It was nominated for the 2014 Eisner Award for best new series, and won the 2015 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book for its portrayals of LGBT characters.

Let’s just say their adventures deal with quite a bit of sex, drugs and violence. It opens with the Rat Queens being sent off on a mission with 3 other mercenary groups. They don’t really want to do it but after a major city brawl they created they don’t have a choice. While out on the mission the find out it was a set up and an assassin was sent to kill them. Being the bad asses that they are they stop the assassination attempt and head back to town to figure out who is behind this. Before starting their investigation they throw and “happy they didn’t die” party, which was quite entertaining. This volume ends with a hint of who might have hired the assassin. But we will wait to see!

This is not a comic for the faint of heart or children to be honest. But it is a hilarious tale that I will continue to read and enjoy. I have now read the second volume and will be writing a review on it as well and finally on to the third which was just finished last year.

As of now they have put the comic on hiatus, with hopes of a webcomic being how this lovely series will have to continues its life. I do hope they follow through as I truly have enjoyed the characters, the story line and the artwork that has gone into Rat Queens.

Stay tuned for my next review!
