This book has been heavily advertised, as none other than Scott Snyder is writing Batman again with an All-Star cast of artists helping along the way. Snyder talked about it being a trip through Batman’s Rogue gallery centering around Harvey Dent and being a Mad Max like adventure. So how does it all shape up?
In a word “perfect”, Scott Snyder is the perfect Batman writer and here he is again showing that off. We get a more snarky light-hearted Batman here, and it is definitely welcome. As usual Snyder’s writing shines here, with plenty of dialog but never too heavy or cumbersome. You can feel and see the mystery setup as we move along in this first issue.
If you were a fan of the New 52 run Snyder did you are in for a treat here. While this Batman is clearly different and not the same, you can feel Snyder coming through here. He truly knows the character of Batman and here you get to see him having a lot of fun with the character. In a very comicbooky over the top story, it is nice to see a Batman that matches that ridiculousness.
This is also a great chance for Snyder to write a lot more of Batman’s Rogue Gallery, he got to play with Riddler and The Joker in his New 52 run but largely didn’t get to do too many others. Here Snyder depicts Harvey Dent as the criminal mastermind that he is putting Batman between a rock and a hard place. We should get to see more of the Rouges along the way, but for now, Snyder is doing a great job with Harvey Dent.
Rounding up this perfect little package we have John Romita Jr on pencils, inks by Danny Miki, and colors by Dean White. Giving these guys enough space to do what they do best and it really shines through. The art here is a masterpiece and will be up there with some of the best looking Batman books.
